Can You Put Vinyl Flooring Over Laminate? What You Should Know

Can You Put Vinyl Flooring Over Laminate?

Most homeowners are wondering if it is possible to install vinyl flooring over laminate. The answer is yes, but in some cases. Laminate vinyl flooring can be installed over existing laminate, saving time, money, and effort if the laminate is in good condition. However, it is not always the best option. The results of this installation are influenced by the stability, smoothness, and moisture content of the laminate. With the right preparation, vinyl flooring can look perfect and last for years.

Can You Put Vinyl Flooring Over Laminate?

If the existing surface of the vinyl flooring is clean, flat, and structurally sound, then it is possible to install on top of the already laid laminate vinyl flooring. Floating vinyl planks or tiles will be a good fit with an even and firmly secured laminate floor. However, if the laminate is uneven, has swelling, or is damaged, repair is required, or it must be removed.

Vinyl flooring requires a clean, nice level surface area so that it can bond to your surface and not shift or have spaces in the flooring. This adhesive is only recommended for click-lock or loose lay vinyls, as glue-downs will most likely not adhere well to laminate.

When It’s a Good Idea

Installing vinyl flooring on laminate is a smart and convenient decision in some circumstances. If you have a laminate floor that is in good condition, but has an oldish appearance, then covering over your laminate floor with a vinyl floor is a quick way to bring your space up to date. It is less messy than ripping up the old floor and is certainly cheaper than a complete replacement.

This method is also useful to maintain the floor level and reduce the installation time. It is especially suitable for use in rooms like bedrooms, corridors, or living areas where the laminate is stable and dry. As long as the surface is flat, this can be a great DIY solution.

When You Should Avoid It

There are some instances when vinyl is not to be placed on laminate. Flaking water, warping, and soft spots, if present on the laminating material, will not be a stable surface. The laminate boards are vulnerable to unevenness, and over time, the vinyl could form movement, cracks, or separation.

High moisture levels, such as in the bathroom or basement, can also spell disaster because of the moisture (that you can’t always prevent) that damages both levels. Furthermore, if the laminate is already too thick, adding vinyl on top of it can raise the level of the floor too much to affect doors or transitions. In all cases, problematic areas must be fixed or removed before the new flooring is installed.

How to Install Vinyl Flooring Over Laminate

Inspect the Surface

Ensure that there is no dirt or lumps, and that the laminate is stuck well in place. Repair or replace loose planks, if any.

Clean Thoroughly

Remove any dust, dirt, wax, or polish that may prevent the vinyl from lying flat.

Use Underlayment (if needed)

It is recommended to install a type of thin underlayment for purposes of noise reduction or moisture control if the room has changing humidity.

Lay Vinyl

Begin laying the vinyl planks or tiles on the click lock system, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Leave Expansion Gaps

Keep a small space (1/4 inch) between walls and fixed structures to allow for natural expansion.

Tips for the Best Results

Allow the vinyl flooring to acclimate to the room for at least 24 to 48 hours before installing it. This allows it to regulate itself at the temperature and humidity. Check door clearances prior to fitting the new floor, and DON’T glue down methods on laminate. Keep the surface in long-term stability by keeping it clean and dry.

So, is it possible to apply vinyl flooring over laminate? Yes – as long as the laminate is solid, smooth, and dry. With the right materials and preparation, all of this new, long-lasting, beautiful floor can be installed without having to remove the old floor.
